5 things to remember when operating a loader backhoe

Will you be using a loader backhoe for the first time? Or do you just want a refresher on some of the best practices for operating one? We asked a group of experienced equipment operators to find out what some of their top tips were for new or inexperienced loader backhoe operators. Here are some of their answers:

1. Call before you dig

This is a big one – that’s why it’s first. Whenever you dig underground you run the risk of damaging utility lines such as gas, electric, telephone, fiber optic, water, sewer, and more. Always call the local utility companies before you dig as operators and/or your company can be liable for damages – not to mention the inherent danger to yourself and others if you hit a gas or electrical lines.

2. Keep the bucket low

When carrying loads in the front bucket, be sure to keep the bucket low. This will help to prevent the machine from tipping if you hit a hole or obstacle.

3. Take your time

The best advice is always to take your time and put safety first. Always read the operating manual before using a machine, make sure you’ve been properly trained, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

4. Make sure you’re in neutral before you drop the machine down

Before you drop the machine down off its stabilizers to reposition, it’s critical to be sure you are always in neutral first. If not, you could quickly find your machine suddenly moving forward or backward, creating a potentially dangerous situation.

5. Check for fluid levels, leaks, and damaged parts

Check your fluid levels before starting the machine. Fluids can leak between uses and lead to excess wear. Before using the machine, also check for any component damage that could pose a safety hazard.
