What is an articulated dump truck?
An articulated dump truck has an articulated chassis. The truck cab (truck) and the rear tipping trough (trailer) meet at a pivot point just behind the cab. Instead of traditional rack and pinion steering used in rigid dump trucks, articulated dump trucks turn by turning at articulation points, commonly referred to as articulated steering.
Advantages of articulated dump trucks
With articulated steering, four-wheel drive and differential locks, today’s articulated trucks offer many advantages. Bigger tires, wider frames and a lower center of gravity make articulated trucks ideal for extreme off-road conditions such as slopes and soft, muddy, icy or uneven terrain. The articulated frames also are less likely to twist when driving over uneven ground.
What are the primary uses of articulated dump trucks?
Articulated dump trucks with sizes from 25 to 40 tons are the best option for moving soft ground compared to heavy rigid dump trucks. Articulated dump trucks are suitable for a variety of mining, quarrying and construction projects, including underground mining and tunneling. Articulated dump truck drivers can work 8 to 16 hours a day on these projects.
