The most reliable trucks you can buy used
Reliability is the first thing most used truck buyers ask about, and it is also one of the hardest things to pin down. Owner surveys, dependability studies and high-mileage data often point in different directions, and a truck that scores well when new does not always hold up at 200,000 miles. This guide pulls those sources together to show which trucks hold up best over time, how to read the different rankings, and what to check on the specific truck you are buying.
The short answer: for long-term durability, the Toyota Tundra and Toyota Tacoma have the strongest track record among light-duty pickups, and heavy-duty trucks such as the Ram 3500 and Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD are the most likely to reach very high mileage. Among recent half-tons, the Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 led J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability study, while Consumer Reports rates the Ford F-150 Hybrid as the most reliable new full-size pickup for 2026.

Quick checklist: how to judge a used truck’s reliability
Model rankings tell you the odds. The truck in front of you tells you the rest. Before you buy or bid, check these items:
- Service records: regular oil changes and at least one transmission fluid service on higher-mileage trucks.
- Open recalls: run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and confirm the work was done.
- Frame and lines: look for rust on the frame, brake lines and fuel lines, especially on trucks from salt-belt states and provinces.
- Towing history: a worn hitch receiver, aftermarket gauges or a brake controller point to heavy towing, which is hard on transmissions.
- Cold start: listen for ticking, knocking or rough running in the first minute.
- Diesel emissions: on diesel trucks, ask for DPF and DEF service history and confirm the emissions system is intact.

Which truck is the most reliable?
The Toyota Tundra is the most reliable light-duty truck for long-term ownership, based on how often it reaches very high mileage.
iSeeCars tracks odometer readings across hundreds of millions of vehicles to estimate how likely each model is to reach 250,000 miles. In a recent version of that study, the Tundra had a 36.6% chance, second only to the heavy-duty Ram 3500 and well above the 19.4% average for all trucks. The Tacoma was one of only two non-heavy-duty trucks to make the top 10.
There is a catch. That reputation was built mostly by earlier generations. The current Tundra, which launched for 2022, finished at the bottom of its segment in J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability study. If long-term durability is your priority, an older Tundra with a clean history is the safer bet than assuming every model year carries the same record.
Which half-ton truck is the most reliable?
It depends on the model year: the Ram 1500 and Silverado 1500 lead recent dependability data, while the F-150 leads predicted reliability for new trucks.
2017 Freightliner Cascadia 125 T/A Sleeper Truck TractorThe two big rankings measure different things. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study counts problems reported by original owners of three-year-old vehicles, so its 2026 results reflect 2023 trucks. In that study, the Ram 1500 ranked first among large light-duty pickups, the Silverado 1500 second, and the F-150 tied with the GMC Sierra 1500 for third. Consumer Reports predicts reliability for new trucks, and for 2026 it gives the F-150 PowerBoost hybrid the highest score of any full-size pickup.
For a used buyer, the J.D. Power result is the more useful of the two, because it describes trucks that are already on the used market. Our half-ton truck comparison covers how the big three differ beyond reliability, and our guide to the best years for Ram 1500 trucks breaks down that model by generation.
What are the most reliable trucks of all time?
Heavy-duty pickups from Ram, Chevrolet, GMC and Ford, along with the Toyota Tundra and Tacoma, have the best record for reaching very high mileage.
In iSeeCars’ longevity rankings, nearly every truck in the top 10 is either a heavy-duty model or a Toyota. The Ram 3500 led with a 42.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, followed by the Tundra, Silverado 2500HD and Sierra 2500HD. Heavy-duty trucks are built with stronger frames, axles and cooling systems than they need for everyday driving, so they tend to last when they are not worked to their limits.
Engine choice matters as much as the badge. Some diesels earned legendary reputations while others did not, so research the exact engine before you buy. Our guides to Duramax reliability by generation, Chevy’s longest-lasting engines and the 6.4 Powerstroke are good places to start.

Are heavy-duty trucks more reliable than half-tons?
Heavy-duty trucks are more likely to reach very high mileage, but recent heavy-duty models have not always scored well in owner reliability surveys.
2020 J & L Pneumatic Bulk TrailerReporting on Consumer Reports’ 2026 heavy-duty data placed the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD at the top of the segment and its GMC Sierra 2500HD twin at the bottom, with the Ford Super Duty also near the bottom. Modern heavy-duty trucks, and diesels in particular, carry complex emissions and electronics that older trucks did not. A heavy-duty truck is still the right choice for regular heavy towing, but it is not automatically the more dependable truck for daily driving.
Is a gas or diesel truck more reliable?
Gas trucks usually cost less to keep reliable, while diesels last longer under heavy towing when their emissions systems are maintained.
A diesel engine block can outlast the rest of the truck, but repairs to injectors, turbochargers and emissions components cost far more than typical gas engine repairs. If you tow heavy loads often, a well-maintained diesel earns its keep. If you tow occasionally, a gas truck is usually the lower-risk used buy. Our guide to the best trucks for towing covers how to match the engine to your trailer.
Do reliable trucks hold their value better?
Generally yes, trucks with a reputation for durability tend to sell for more at the same age and mileage.
That works in your favor when you sell, and it is worth checking before you buy. Comparing recent sold prices for the same model, year and mileage shows you what the market actually pays, so you can tell whether a reliable truck is fairly priced or carrying too much of a premium. Our pickup truck inspection tips walk through what to look at on auction day.
The bottom line
For the best odds of reaching high mileage, look at the Toyota Tundra, Toyota Tacoma and heavy-duty trucks like the Ram 3500 and Silverado 2500HD. For a recent half-ton, the Ram 1500 and Silverado 1500 have the strongest three-year dependability record, and the F-150 leads predicted reliability for new trucks. Whatever you choose, the maintenance history of the individual truck matters more than any ranking.
