How forklift certifications work

Forklift certification is often talked about, but not always clearly explained. Many people hear terms like licenses, online certification, or OSHA approval and assume they all mean the same thing. In reality, forklift certifications in the United States follows a specific process that depends on training, evaluation, and employer authorization. This guide breaks down how it works, how long it lasts, what it costs, and where to check state and workplace requirements.

What forklift certification actually is (and what it isn’t)

Forklift certifications are not a government-issued license nor is there a federal agency that hands out forklift licenses to operators.

Instead, forklift certification refers to a process required by OSHA that includes:

  • Formal training on forklift operation and safety
  • A hands-on evaluation of the operator
  • Employer authorization to operate specific equipment in a specific workplace

In simple terms, certification is proof that an operator has been trained and evaluated according to workplace safety rules. It is tied to both the type of forklift and the work environment, not just the individual.

This distinction is important, because many misunderstandings about forklift certification start with the assumption that it works like a driver’s license.

How to get forklift certification in the US

Getting forklift certification typically involves two parts: training and evaluation.

First, the operator must receive training. This usually includes classroom instruction, online coursework, or a combination of both. Training covers topics like load handling, stability, operating controls, and workplace hazards.

Second, the operator must be evaluated while operating a forklift in real conditions. This practical evaluation is usually conducted by the employer or a qualified trainer.

Once both steps are completed, the employer documents the certification and authorizes the operator to use specific forklift types in that workplace.

It’s important to note that online courses alone are not enough. Online training can cover theory, but OSHA requires a hands-on evaluation before an operator is considered certified.

It’s important to note that specific certifications typically apply to specific forklift types. If you’re unsure which type of forklift you need to operate, check out our other guides on the different types of forklift

Do you need a license to drive a forklift?

No, you do not need a government-issued license to drive a forklift in the United States.

This is one of the most common questions, and one of the most common misconceptions. Forklift operators are not licensed by the state or federal government in the way commercial drivers are.

What employers are required to do is ensure that operators are trained, evaluated, and authorized under OSHA’s forklift safety standard. Some training providers use the word “license” informally, which adds to the confusion, but legally speaking, forklift operation is based on certification and employer authorization, not licensing.

How long does forklift certification last?

Forklift certification does not last forever. Under OSHA guidelines, operators must be re-evaluated at least once every three years.

That said, there are situations where retraining or re-evaluation is required sooner. These include:

  • An accident or near-miss involving a forklift
  • Unsafe operation observed by a supervisor
  • Assignment to a different type of forklift
  • Significant changes to the workplace environment

Because certification is tied to both equipment and conditions, a change in either can trigger the need for additional training.

How long is a forklift certification good for?

In general, forklift certification is considered valid for up to three years, as long as none of the conditions requiring earlier retraining occur.

However, certification does not automatically transfer between employers. A new employer is still responsible for evaluating an operator’s ability and authorizing them to operate forklifts in that specific workplace.

This is why experienced operators are often re-evaluated when starting a new job, even if they already have prior certification documentation.

How much does forklift certification cost?

The cost of forklift certification varies depending on how and where the training is completed.

In many cases, employers provide forklift training at no cost to the employee, especially when certification is required for the job. When individuals pay for training themselves, costs can vary.

Typical cost ranges include:

  • Online training courses: often lower-cost, covering classroom instruction only
  • In-person training and evaluation: generally higher cost due to hands-on instruction
  • Employer-provided training: often covered by the employer as part of job requirements

Costs can also vary based on location, equipment type, and whether multiple forklift types are included in the training. Because of this, it’s best to view advertised prices as general estimates rather than fixed amounts.

Is forklift certification valid everywhere?

Forklift certification follows the operator, but it does not automatically authorize operation in every workplace.

Even with prior certification, employers are still responsible for ensuring that operators can safely use forklifts in their specific environment. This often means conducting a site-specific evaluation or refresher training.
