Finishing strong: why your equipment fleet deserves a year-end look
As 2026 draws to a close, businesses across EMEA have a natural window to look at what is sitting idle in their yards and decide what to carry into 2027.
For many equipment owners, 2026 has been a year of holding on. Economic uncertainty, rising operating costs and margin pressure have pushed companies to keep machines longer and defer decisions about what to sell, replace or retire. The result, in more yards than you might think, is a backlog of equipment that no longer earns its keep but still takes up space, still needs maintenance and still ties up capital.
Year-end is a practical point to deal with it. For companies facing a fiscal year-end or tax deadline, surplus equipment is one more item to resolve before the books close. For others, the turn of the year is simply a sensible time to reassess the fleet rather than carry idle assets into another twelve months. Either way, selling is not a panicked clear-out. It is a decision that can release capital, simplify operations and set a business up for the year ahead.
Local knowledge, global reach
For most sellers, the question is less whether to sell than how to get the right result. A domestic market may be too small, too price-sensitive or too far from the right buyers to deliver full value. Ritchie Bros. addresses this by combining local market expertise with access to buyers across regions and continents.
In Lesotho, the WRES Senqu River Bridge Joint Venture, led by Webuild, completed the country’s first extradosed bridge. The project left it with more than 200 construction assets at one of Southern Africa’s most remote sites. The domestic market alone could not absorb the fleet, and Webuild needed everything sold in a single round. Ritchie Bros. proposed an IronPlanet unreserved online auction: every asset stayed on site, was inspected and listed, and was backed by targeted international marketing. Bidders from 15 countries across five continents took part. The sale moved 204 assets at a 95% sold-through rate. Most buyers came from Lesotho and neighbouring South Africa, which met the priority of strong local demand.
“This sale demonstrates that location doesn’t have to limit demand,” says Nicola Nicelli, Strategic Account Director, Ritchie Bros.

In India, heavy lift specialist Dewanchand Ramsaran Corporation (DRCPL) faced a different challenge. The family-run company needed to sell three Liebherr LR1600/2 600-tonne crawler cranes. All had been bought new and maintained to OEM standards, and the company knew a price-sensitive domestic market would not reflect their value. Through Marketplace-E, Ritchie Bros. connected DRCPL with one of Europe’s largest crane companies, and all three machines sold at values that reflected their condition and maintenance history.
“Ritchie Bros. helped us find the right buyers and negotiated without giving in to unrealistic expectations. They supported us like partners,” says Jay Makad, Director, DRCPL.
Choosing the right route
Different assets call for different approaches. Unreserved auctions suit sellers who want certainty that everything sells. Marketplace-E offers owners of premium, high-value equipment a negotiated route to the right buyer, wherever that buyer is. Ritchie Bros. local teams help sellers weigh up these options. They also provide additional services that simplify the transaction, from inspections and detailed listings to targeted marketing.
Starting 2027 ready
Reviewing the fleet now gives businesses a clearer picture going into the new year: which machines are working hard, which are standing idle, and which could become capital for the next project. With local expertise on the ground and buyers around the world, geography and market size no longer have to decide the outcome.
