Caterpillar D11 dozer: Understanding the D11’s price and performance

Where are D11 dozers made?

First introduced in 1986, the Caterpillar D11 is the largest bulldozer produced by the Irving, Texas-based heavy equipment manufacturer. Today’s Caterpillar dozers are produced mostly at a manufacturing facility in Peoria, Illinois, which also served as the company headquarters for many years. Caterpillar also produces bulldozers across factories in Europe and South America to better serve its global customer base.

Since the introduction of the D11, Caterpillar has introduced several significant updates and improvements over the years that will reflect on the pricing. Some of the most notable years and associated upgrades include:

1997: D11R Series
The D11R series brought several updates, including improved engine technology, increased horsepower, and enhancements to the undercarriage and hydraulics system. The R-Series dozers also introduced advanced monitoring systems, contributing to better machine diagnostics and maintenance.

2008: D11T Series
Caterpillar introduced the D11T, featuring the C32 ACERT engine, which delivered increased fuel efficiency and met stricter emissions standards. The D11T also came with Enhanced AutoShift (EAS) and the Advisor Monitoring System for improved performance, fuel efficiency, and operator comfort.

2013: D11T CD
In 2013, Caterpillar released the D11T Carry Dozer (CD) version, designed for high-volume earthmoving tasks. The CD version included a larger blade capacity, more powerful hydraulics, and reinforced structures for carrying heavy loads.

2018: D11T with Productivity Enhancements
Caterpillar introduced several productivity enhancements to the D11T, such as updates to the undercarriage for improved durability, the integration of optional remote-control capabilities, and additional operator comfort and safety features.

What is the D11 used for?

Primarily used for mining, quarrying, and large-scale construction projects, the Cat D11 is relied on to push heavy materials and dirt, as well as grading aggregate and construction sites. The D11’s blade is capable of pushing large quantities of earth, rocks, and debris, and it can be equipped with specialized attachments such as rippers and blades for specific tasks.

D11 blades are made from high tensile steel for strength and durability. They are suitable for fine grading and for moving material over gentle slopes and short distances. Four types of blade options are available:

  • Straight-Blade (for grading and greater penetration)
  • Universal-Blade (for carrying more material over greater distances)
  • Straight-Universal Blade (combination blade)
  • Coal Universal Blade (for handling up to 74.9 cubic meters of coal)

For ground-breaking work, single shank or multi-shank rippers attachments are also available.

D11 key features and benefits

Today’s D11 operating weight is 229,800 pounds (104,236 kilograms). Its overall 35.8-foot length (with blade and ripper), 10.4-foot width over tracks, and 14.9-foot height, make it a large and laterally stable machine, especially when traversing over mud and snow.

When the Caterpillar D11R first came out, its engine was capable of generating 770hp. Today’s Caterpillar D11T relies on a CAT C32 engine with ACERT technology to generate 850hp. Both the D11R and D11T are available in a sturdier CarryDozer (CD) model.

How big is a D11 dozer?

When it comes to dozers Caterpillar dominates the North American market with its expansive list of offering. You can get small dozers, medium and large. A small dozer weighs around 18,000 pounds to give you some context compared to the D11’s operating weight is 229,800 pounds (104,236 kilograms).

Caterpillar’s small dozer models include the D1, D2, and D3 dozers, while medium-size model are the D4, D5, D6, D7, and D8. The D11 isn’t the only model consider “large”. The D9 and D10 are also considered large bulldozers, with operating weights above 100,000 lbs.

Next generation of Cat D11s

Caterpillar has its eye on the future of electrification in the heavy equipment industry. During MinExpo 2021, the company unveiled a prototype of the popular D11 called the D11XE. It’s an electric drive dozer and it promises to be the manufacturer’s most fuel-efficient dozer in the lineup.  It also promises 20% longer life, 25% less fuel consumed (per unit of material moved), and 60% fewer moving parts in the electric drivetrain.

We sell bulldozers from Cat and other top manufactures.

  • Hey folks, I see that your article says that a D 11 is the largest dozer made but I know something you don’t know then. I saw them bring in a D 12 T at the mine. I just wondered if there were any videos of that one working. I’d like to see that.
