Sweet opportunities await at Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers dispersal auction

The Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers was established in 1970 as a member-owned cooperative of 100 South Texas farmers. The group pledged both money and cropland to help build a new mill and establish sustainable crops. The construction of a $28 million mill was completed three years later in time for its first harvest at the end of 1973.

Just over 50 years later, the sugar crop business in South Texas has literally dried up. Severe drought conditions and water supply issues in the area has forced the sugarcane growers to shut down. The RGVSG was one of the top-10 producers of raw sugar in the U.S., processing more than 1.5 million tons of sugar annually.
